Sault Ste. Marie

The name of this town is pronounced Sue Saint Marie and it is on the border to Canada with the International Bridge spanning the river between Lake Superior & Lake Huron, both of which are huge.
Sunset at the camp looking across to Canada
Today the sun is out and we are feeling a little better although the camp is still full of temporary lakes and a duck flew in to land in the 'pond' behind our RV, skidding nicely across the water and proceeding to happily swim around in the puddle.  At least the ducks were happy!

We head down to the old town and Soo Locks to see what it is all about and spend a couple of hours watching boats go through the locks from the platform in the park.

The boat comes in and ties up to dock.  The gates close behind it.

The front gates start allowing water in to fill up the lock.  There is 21 feet difference in the water level of the two lakes.

The boat below the dock level as it starts to rise.

About half way up.....

The boats up at dock level having risen 21 ft and the front gates open for it to carry on out to Lake Superior.

An over view of Soo Locks, left side is USA and right is Canada..... on right of picture is the rapids which is why the locks are needed to traverse from one lake to another.

It's off on its way and the next one is coming in on the high from Lake Superior and then will be lowered down 21ft to Lake Huron level.  This barge is a little bigger but definitely not the biggest as we have seen freighters going up and down the river from camp.

Goin down......

And then the tug is pushing it out at the lower level and it's all over.

Next we head over to Canada, cause it is so much fun going through the border crossings not......  Most of Sault Ste. Marie is on the Canadian side but there is a bush plane museum that Daryl wants to visit so we cross the International Bridge and wander around the mall, check out the train trip to Agawa Canyon and water front before going on to the museum.

After this we drive around the area and stop for an early Italian dinner as the girl at the Visitor center informed us that Sault Ste Marie is known for it's Italian food - there is a lot of Italian businesses here.  Unfortunately the place she recommended turned out to be very American Italian and was disappointing.   Back to camp to watch the sun go down.
