Mackinac Island

It is a disgusting day!!!!
Wet, cold and pouring by mid morning - thunderstorms forecast......yuck and we had planned to go to Mackinac Island for the day and take our cycles - I can tell you I was none to keen this morning.

We check the forecast and see the rain is supposed to stop after lunch and there is thunderstorms after that so decide to have lunch here and then see how the day is turning out.

It fines up a bit and the rain stops, sun peeks through although the temperature is still only around 15 degrees but we decide it is today or not at all, so we jam the bikes in the coupe and head down to the wharf to catch the ferry across.

We don't really know what to expect and when we get there it is a mixture of pleasant surprise and tourist mega.   The Grand Hotel on the hill as we cruise in to the harbour.

Below, we step off the boat into the main street - there are bikes everywhere and horse and carriages and people.  Lovely old English style shops all around us - just something different.

The weather is threatening to change again so we decide to cycle around the island first and head out of town and around the coast.
It is about 13.5 km around the island - there is no motorised vehicles so you can imagine the cycles everywhere.  I read they can take up to 15,000 people per day....

As we go around, the scenery is stunning but we keep going as we can see the rain coming across the bay from St Ignace and we want to round before it hits.

You can take your own cycle for $8 return or hire one there but it is about $44 each to rent a mountain bike.  Hence we took ours!

We make it round only getting a little wet - it was worth coming out and it was a good ride.  We park the bikes in town and have a look around the shops.

A Mackinac Fudge shop window with heels of fudge - cool.

Read the sign for some history on Mackinac Island - since 1670.

Some beautiful houses and authentic horse & carriages - caught the driver changing into his wet weather gear......

We make it home just in time before another huge down pour - a good day out.
