Copper Harbor Peninsula- Day trip

We are on a peninsula again and today we decide to cruise up the to Copper Harbor on the tip of the peninsula in Lake Superior.  The trip is supposed to take an hour roughly but it took us most of the day to get up there and back to Hancock.

First stop was a diversion into Calumet an old copper mining town - there was a copper mining boom in the early 1800's and a lot of Finnish & Cornish immigrated then - the pasty is big up here and closest thing to a pie we have found.

Lots of craft and antique shops - lots of copper work.

They call themselves "Yoopers" which is derived from Upper Peninsula's (UP'ers).

They tongue in check call anyone living below the Mackinac Bridge, "Troll"....

Next stop was Eagle River Falls & Bridge, township and beach...

The courthouse built in 1866 & Daryl cuffed to the pole.....

Next stop is Jacob's Falls near Eagle Harbor.....

An then a beach....a little chilly wind coming in off the lake.

Some amazing log houses around this area.  Lots of lighthouses and eventually we actually make it to Copper Harbor.....there wasn't much there!

So we shared an ice cream sundae with blackberry topping.

Looking at the sign, you can see the mileage - 200 miles across the bottom two lines each way - you can get an idea of the size of Lake Superior.  Around here, you can't walk a mile without running into another lake and there are a tonne of waterfalls too.

We start heading back and stop along the way to skype Jaimee Rose for her fourth birthday and watch her open our present. Glad to see the Hello Kitty clothes fit and were a hit.

Houses in Hancock and down town in Houghton.
