Topeka - Newton Iowa via Missouri

We hit the road at 8.45am - this is a record for us!
Heading north east via a little town called Atchison which the train tour guide guy had mentioned.  The town has Amelia Earhart's home and many other historic houses but we have a long haul today and after a quick stop to find a map reference we keep going, crossing over into Missouri.

We pass lots of corn.... and barns of all types - some really neat ones and lots and lots of fallen down, run down and/or tornado damaged ones - would make some really good pictures but we are travelling to fast and it is too much of a mission to detour off the interstate in the RV & trailer for a picture of a barn...

Leaving Missouri we cross into Iowa and continue north up to Des Moines - on the way we come across a sign for the Bridges of Madison County (and John Wayne's birthplace), so we take a detour and stop at the information centre for some instructions on how to get to the bridge in the movie.  Daryl of course spots the cars parked next door, so that is the first stop....

Two peas in a pod.........

Then we head over to Winterset where John Wayne was born and check out his house & memorial statue along with the town and courthouse building.

Next we are off out to Roseman Covered Bridge where the movie was filmed - down a long, long dirt road and Daryl has a lot of cleaning to do after this one!

The detour has taken a couple of hours so we are late getting into Dea Moines - the camp I had chosen was fully booked and after a little GPS booboo trying to locate another one, we head out east to Newton, which is on the way to Davenport where we are ultimately heading to meet an old friend of Daryl's.

Finally we are seeing some different names on the signs as we get further east
We finally make camp and someone settles down for a well deserved Nana nap.....
