Topeka, Kansas

Daryl read a book over many years....that was based in Topeka so we headed back down to Kansas state capital, Topeka (on the east end of Kansas).  The land was much prettier with rolling green landscape all the way.   On the way down we stopped for petrol, and were mobbed by truck loads of circus people......  not the best... and hard to get out of there around them.
We booked into Lake Shawnee Campground for two days which is a state park but has full facilities except wifi.  We arrive and set up camp, sat down and enjoyed the surroundings for about an hour until we saw the line of circus people arrived at the same camp!   Drat.....

Sunset at the camp
Next day is bright and sunny, so we head into Topeka to see what is around and have a hard time finding anything.  Eventually we make our way to the Grand Railway Station and tagged on to a tour.

Next we head out to the Combat Air Museum - the day is very hot and it is nice to be indoors.

Top Gun......Tom Cruise?
However, when we come out there are some very black clouds brooding and after a few minutes we decide to head back to camp as the awning is still up.  Unfortunately when we get there the rain has beat us - in fact we find it is a flash flood with hurricane type winds - the awning is hanging full of water and the frame is all bent.  Bugger.
We struggle to get it down and end up tipping all the water out in the pouring rain before we can get the pressure off enough to move the side arms. Now drained, the rain eventually passes over and we assess the damage - we can still get it up and down but has a bow in it like a boomerang.

An hour later and you would never know the storm had been - the sun is out and it is very hot again.

We back up ready to leave in the morning.
