The drive to San Luis Valley is pretty uneventful with the
exception of passing a heard of buffalo in a paddock. The camp is in the middle of nowhere and is
at best described as rustic…….driving up to it you are wondering what you have
got yourself into, but when you get to the camp up a long, long driveway past
wrecking yards etc, and check in, which was almost as scary, it turns out to be
one of the nicest little camps around.
Great sites (only about 15 in the whole camp) with full hook ups and a
view out over the plains to the mountains behind, on the other side is the
Rockies. So peaceful and no rules but
everyone respects each other’s privacy and space, lovely big trees and a
feeling of serenity. We are staying for
two nights and it is the first camp we feel like not leaving.
Fire on the Rockies (below) adjacent to the camp but far enough away to be safe.
After setting up we go for a drive and end up in Poncho
Springs which has nothing, so go further down the road to Salida and find the
old town. Takes us a while to decide
what this town is about - we decide on the hippy theme going on with a tonne of
second hand clothing and art shops in town.
Colorado has legalised medicinal marijuana and there are shops selling
their wares everywhere. This attracts
the free lifestyle types and it doesn’t seem to matter too much what you wear or
how you look around here. They are
setting up for a concert and art display in the park starting tomorrow and we
look around the antique shops before picking up groceries and heading back to
camp for a relaxing night.
