Houston - Galveston

Monday morning we headed down to Houston, ......... "we have lift off".

Hands down, we have found the worst driver's in America so far....what a nightmare and another ten dollars for road tolls.  We were pleased to get to the RV park and settle in - we booked for two nights.

Next day, we decide to visit the battleship Texas and NASA.  Unfortunately it started thundering & lightening when we arrived at NASA and the tram ride which took you around Johnson facilities was cancelled, as it could get hit with lightening.  We did what shows we could and arranged to be able to come back again within the next 10 days.

The drive home enforced that Houston traffic is hideous - the GPS gauged an hour to home and it took us 2.5 hours to get there through heavy rain and lightening.......  a strong bourbon was needed.

Wednesday morning we headed to Galveston on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, ending up at Jamaica Beach RV Park, a few miles down the coast.  Parked right across the road from the beach, very relaxing & quiet - nice place.
This coast was hit by Hurricane Ike in 2009 and you can still see the devastation with many places still being rebuilt, abandoned or just the sections there now.  Looks like not everyone had insurance and some are rebuilding bit by bit.

Thursday we checked out The Strand which is like an old down town kind of New Orleans style and then returned to NASA for the afternoon, taking the tram ride around the Johnson Space Centre training & testing areas, we did a tour of the workshops where the equipment is made for the space station and testing robots. They also have a few Rockets & rocket engines on display which included full size rocket that sent the Apollo to the moon.

Friday we decided to stay another day and take it easy.  We poked around down The Strand again and checked out the old houses - beautiful grand old houses, bishop's palace, the wharf etc.

All the houses along coast are on stilts - a narrow strip of land.

Saturday morning we went for our morning walk/run down the beach.  We came back, the sun was out, a nice day and we headed over for a shower leaving the place to air out.  When I got out of the shower, the rain was bucketing down in a deluge - straight away knew I had to go out in it as we had left the door open and it was coming from exactly that angle.... by the time I got to the RV (about 500m), I was wetter than I had been in the shower and the RV was soaked, our shoes, mats, chairs, everything were saturated - it had gone straight in thru the door!  Once we soaked up what we could, I then had to go & wash/dry all the towels, clothes etc before we could leave....so much for an early start!
